Learn to see with new eyes

The School started in 1937 with classes in economics.

Leon MacLaren was the founder, drawing initially on economic ideas of land taxation from Henry George.

After the war, it became clear that economics alone was not enough and so Leon MacLaren began to investigate philosophy, based on Plato.

His aim was to both find truth and justice, and teach them.

The School of Philosophy offers courses in practical philosophy and economics with justice as well as other subjects.

It aims to approach philosophy in a practical way, encouraging students to apply philosophy in their lives.

The School also introduces a mindfulness-type exercise leading eventually to mantra meditation.
